This Girl Can is our nationwide campaign developed by Sport England to get women and girls moving, regardless of shape, size and ability. It’s a celebration of active women up and down the country who are doing their thing no matter how well they do it, how they look or even how red their face gets.
Research has revealed that there is a huge difference in the number of men and women playing sport. And it's not because females don't want to get active. Millions of women and girls are afraid to exercise because of fear of judgement.
In Nottingham we are running the campaign at 3 of the City Secondary schools- The Trinity School, The Nottingham Girls Academy and The Nottingham Emmanuel School.
Yesterday saw the first Girls Only festival take place at Trinity School with Our Lady of Perpetual Succour attending.
The primary school brought along 35 Yr. 5 and 6 girls to take part in an afternoon of coaching and friendly tournaments. The girls at The Trinity School planned the event which started with a video of their campaign and an introduction to each of the girls in Yr. 8 to sixth form. The girls explained that they had chosen handball and football for the primary girls to try out as they were sports that they enjoyed and felt everyone could have a go at getting involved.
The primary girls were divided into teams, each team was named after a famous female handball and football player and they then received 15minutes of ‘coaching’ on the rules and play of each of the sports to prepare them for the tournament. They then took part in a round robin tournament in the school gym and astro turf. The Trinity girls led their teams to their fixtures and encouraged them throughout the afternoon from the side-lines.
At the end of the event the girls were shown a slideshow of themselves in action and it was great to see each of the Yr. 5/6 girls actively involved, having fun and supporting each other- the smiles on the photos prove what a successful event the Trinity girls had put on.
The team leaders then presented the Yr. 5/6 girls with certificates.
Thank you to the Trinity- This Girl Can group, for organising such an inspiring, well planned event, and to the girls at Our Lady OPS for attending.
We look forward to the next festivals and to the girls in sport morning taking place on Thursday 23rd June, 9.30am-12pm at NTU.
