The Yr. 5/6 Mini Basketball City Finals took place on Thursday 11th December, 1pm-3pm at Nottingham Trent University.
10 teams took part in this event after qualifying from 2 heats which saw 23 City teams take part. The standard of play has been much improved this year with teams really focusing on their technique and drills during practices prior to the tournament.
For the City Finals the schools were put into 2 pools of 5, playing a round robin format to decide who would go through to the semi-finals and then the final game. Games were 5 minutes each way with schools rotating their players at half time.
27 games of Basketball were played during this event totalling in nearly 400 baskets being scored. However the two top teams throughout the tournament met each other for the final match- Old Basford and South Wilford. Old Basford worked hard to keep up with the skill and technical form of South Wilford however South Wilford really were in a class of their own this year with some outstanding players who clearly have spent a lot of time training in the sport.
The bronze medal match was extremely close between Ambleside and Fernwood finishing in a draw. This then led to extra time where Fernwood scored another 2 baskets to take the Bronze Medals.
Congratulations to all of the teams who took part in this finals event, it was a fantastic tournament to attend and great to see so many young talented players.
Thank you to Austin Grant (County Coach) and the leaders from Central College who refereed the matches.
